SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) Shreveport councilman John Nickelson says the mayor needs checks and balances, especially when it comes to his decisions to sign big contracts.
“Good government is all about checks and balances,” Nickelson said. “This is a way of imposing a check on the city’s executive government.”
Nickelson proposed an ordinance to limit a mayor’s ability to sign a contract worth more than $100,000 without city council’s approval. He says it’s because of an insurance company decision made by mayor Perkins recently.
“This would just be over-cumbersome for the administration to approve every single contract that would come in over 100,000 thousand,” Perkins said.
The conversation continues on Tuesday when the council will vote on the ordinance.
