Louisiana Rep. Barbara Norton has announced her intention to run for the state Senate seat in District 39 in a bid to continue to serve the citizens of Shreveport.
The seat is currently occupied by Greg Tarver, a Democrat who is serving his second term in the Senate and is eligible to run for a third term this fall.
“I have one more term before I’m term-limited, yet currently I’m focusing on the upcoming legislative session and taking care of the concerns of my constituents,” Tarver said In a statement sent to ArkLaTexhomepage.com Thursday afternoon. “I plan to make a formal announcement about the election, that doesn’t take place until October, after the session in June.”
Norton has served 11 years in the House of Representatives, having won re-election twice since she was first elected to the seat in 2007. Term limits prevent her from running again in the House.
At a news conference Thursday morning, Norton vowed to increase wages for all Louisiana workers, improve affordable healthcare, impact economic development, revamp the infrastructure, and support teacher pay raises if elected to the state Senate.
The primary is on October 12, 2019, and the general election is on November 16. The filing deadline for candidates is August 8, 2019.
