Pro athletes to raise money for Salvation Army’s angel tree program

The Salvation Army of Texarkana’s angel tree project has captured the eye of some professional athletes.

There’s only a week left in the Salvation Army’s angel tree program and the charity is only halfway to fulfilling its goal.  Major David Feeser said, “We have about eight hundred and fifty on the tree.  Seven hundred and fifty are kids, a hundred are seniors.”

Now some pro athletes are stepping up to help.  Lucas Wacha played for the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League.  Referencing his love for his hometown, Lucas said, “It made me, it helped me to get where I am today.”

Lucas and his brother, Michael Wacha, a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, plan to rally the community Thursday night, December fifth.  They want to raise money for those that are left on the angel tree.  “Hopefully push, get enough toys and money to push them, to get close to the end, because this is the last week for the Salvation Army,” Lucas said.

The brothers will sign autographs and take photos for a donation.  The idea for the event started with a conversation between Lucas and his mother.  According to Karen Wacha, “He said, let’s think of something we can do for Texarkana … when they were younger we’d pick an angel off the tree.”  The family then settled on raising money for the Salvation Army angel tree program.

Proceeds from Thursday night’s event will benefit the Salvation Army’s angels.  “It’s all those that are at the poverty level or right there at the poverty level,” Feeser said.  Lucas added, “It’s about giving back and it’s about trying to help people have the thrill that I was blessed with having at Christmas.”

Lucas also plans to cut his hair for Locks of Love on Thursday night.  It took him three and a half years to grow it out.

Thursday night’s event will take place December 5, 2018 at Gusano’s Pizzeria at 2820 Richmond Road starting at 6:30pm.  Autographs and photos will be taken with a toy donation or $20.  Organizers ask that you please bring the item you want to be signed.  Lucas will donate his hair at 8pm.
