The Salvation Army homeless shelter in Texarkana, Arkansas closed Tuesday. But the move is only temporary.
Shelter officials said the floor needs to be replaced. Renovations are estimated to take about two weeks to complete.
Some shelter residents will temporarily stay at other facilities, while others will stay with families.
Shelter Program Manager Marty Hawkins said, “We hate closing but unfortunately, we looked at trying to spread this out over, you know, do one part of the building then the next part, and then another part, but it would take so long and cause such an inconvenience. We don’t want to do that.”
The Salvation Army’s cooling station will remain open in the foyer area of the Center of Hope homeless shelter from 7am to 9:30pm. Dinner will be served every night between 5:30pm and 6pm. However, showers will not be available. The phone will continue to be answered around the clock.
