Texarkana, Ark., elementary students collect thousands of cans through donation drive

TEXARKANA, Ark. (KTAL/KMSS) – A local food bank is getting a big boost from some students.

Kilpatrick Elementary is hosting its annual Hunger’s No Game 5K & Fun Run Saturday, May 18. The event is a school-wide project to collect non-perishable food items for Harvest Regional Food Bank. The entry fee for the event is 10 canned goods.

The non-profit provides kid-friendly food for students who need meals over the weekend. School officials said the donation drive is a way to give back to the organization.

“People that don’t got a lot of food, they need to eat,” said Mahliek Ward, fifth grader. “So, that’s why we’re raising all these cans.”

“We wanted them to understand that right here in their home, you can make a difference,” said Jennifer Page, counselor at Kilpatrick Elementary.

This year the school surpassed it’s goal by collecting more than 12,000 non-perishable items.

The event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at Kilpatrick Elementary.
