Texarkana Turkey Trot raises funds for non-profit

The holidays are off to a running start for some folks in Texarkana.

Families flocked to Spring Lake Park this Thanksgiving to take part in the fifth annual Turkey Trot.

“It’s just a fun thing to do as a family,” said the Filla family. “We wear our fun shirts and have a great time with a lot of other people.”

Dozens of runners woke up early to show support for the non-profit Community Healthcore.

“It’s really rewarding to do this, because a lot of people are sleeping in,” said Raven Morris. “So, it’s really rewarding to know we’re doing something different.”

Organizers say more than 250 people from across the country participated in this Thanksgiving tradition.

“All of these folks are coming home for the holiday to spend time with their family and we appreciate them coming out to spend time with us this morning, too,” said Jeanell Cannon with Community Healthcore.

Community Healthcore provides mental health and substance abuse services to several area counties, which some said is a worthy reason to run.
“It’s a good feeling knowing that you’re helping somebody,” said Tammy Winters.
Organizers say they hope to raise $5,000 through today’s event.
