Texarkana, Texas city officials agreed Monday night not to increase property taxes.
The board also voted to reinstate eleven positions within the city that had previously been frozen.
Last week, a citizens advisory committee recommended the board vote against the proposal and money should be taken from the city’s reserve fund for this year’s budget shortfall. Monday night, the board agreed to transfer six million dollars into its general fund.
The city reported falling sales tax revenue last month. Texarkana, Texas Public Information Officer Lisa Thompson said, “Staff doesn’t plan to bring a budget increase to council next year we hope to not do that any year, but our hope is that this next year we’ll be able to work with the budget advisory committee and really work out some of these issues and bring council a balanced budget.”
