Texarkana, Texas city officials said Tuesday they are no longer considering whether to reduce the number of fire stations.

The former city manager had asked the fire chief to review whether it was a possibility to reduce the number of stations from five to four.  A reduction would have also meant fewer personnel.

The city said the idea is now off the table.  Public Information Office Lisa Thompson said, “The consolidation of the fire departments was really our former city manager’s suggestion and since then, we’ve done a little bit of research and determined it’s really not possible. We need the forces we have now in the fire department, we need all the stations we have.”

The city still plans to build three new fire stations, but those plans are delayed for several years for budget reasons.
