BARKSDALE AFB, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – “I’m just out here to see the show have a good time,” said Jonathan Gerthe, who showed up Friday evening for a special preview of the 2019 Defenders of Liberty Airshow at Barksdale Air Force Base
The exclusive sneak-peek was for military members, their families, and retirees.
“It’s showing off a lot of the talent,” said Christopher Wilcox, who also attended the show.
The Defenders of Liberty Airshow is back after skipping 2018. It’s now a biennial event due to costs.
It’s free and open to the community so they can come on base and see some military operations they may not have been able to see before,” said 2nd Lt. Gerald Peden.
Organizers say Saturday and Sunday’s air shows will draw more than 100,000 people.
“The purpose of this event is to highlight military excellence and the capabilities it brings and also give appreciation to the community for the support received throughout the year. So we encourage individuals to come in and see how things are at Barksdale Air Force Base,” said Peden.
Spectators will see a flyby from the bombers manned by Barksdale’s own Global Strike Command. Plus a B-52 will deliver a wall of fire and Shreveport’s own Kevin Coleman will perform in his world-class stunt aircraft.
“We can’t wait to bring our kids back out to the next day. It’s just great to get everyone on the base and see what they do here,” said Wilcox.
Attendance is free and free, on-base parking is available through the North and West gates. The North Gate (Bossier) and West Gate (Shreveport) will allow public access beginning at 9 a.m. on both days. No overnight parking permitted.
Gates open Saturday at 9:00 am and the show starts at 11:00 am. Click here for more details.
