Game Warden Quint Balkcom confirmed that three other people were on the boat with Hampton when he allegedly ran over and killed Roberto Carlos Bermejo Hernandez.
Officials took blood to be sent off for a toxicology report.
Hampton has previous convictions for DWI and drug possession.
“History is the best indicator of future,” said Captain Balkcom. “We have reason to believe that there was alcohol involved, we have evidence that leads us to believe that may have been the case.”
Captain Balkcom says they want to people to enjoy the outdoors, but safely.
“Unfortunately, last night, a mother and a father lost their son due to the negligence of another human being,” said Captain Balkcom.
A gofundme set up for the family indicates that Hernandez may have died saving his 3-year-old sister’s life.

UPDATE #2 (2:45 P.M.)
The Smith County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Monday afternoon about the Lake Palestine accident, detailing that Hampton was caught after deputies received a tip from a witness.
Hampton’s boat was described as “a red and black bass boat” and fled the scene.
Deputies interviewed witnesses and a tip was given about Hampton.
The accident killed 14-year-old Roberto Carlos Bermejo Hernandez and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Carlos was a former Tyler ISD student.

The boy killed in the hit-and-run on Lake Palestine has been identified.
Tyler ISD released a statement on Monday identifying him as Roberto Carlos Bermejo Hernandez.
He is a former Moore Middle School student.

Carlos was pronounced dead at the scene after Jeffery Hampton allegedly ran him over with a boat and drove off.
Hampton is being held on $750,000 bond.
ORIGINAL STORY (7:30 A.M.)
A Tyler man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run in Lake Palestine that killed a 14-year-old boy on Sunday, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
Jeffery Joe Hampton, 31, was arrested early Monday morning by Texas Parks and Wildlife. He is currently sitting in the Smith County Jail on a $750,000 bond.
The boy remains unidentified.
Hampton has been arrested multiple times over the past decade. He was booked for DWI and pled guilty back in 2008.
He also has two previous drug possession convictions.
