UPDATE: A bill that would have banned hand-held cell phone use while driving stalled in the Louisiana Senate last week.

It’s already illegal to text or post to social media sites while driving. House Bill 619 would have extended that to using the cell phone in any way.

The regular session ended on Friday. A special session to address Louisiana’s budget problems begins on Tuesday.

ORIGINAL: Louisiana lawmakers are considering a bill that bans hand-held cell phone use while driving.

It’s already illegal to text or post to social media sites while driving. House Bill 619 will extend that to using the cell phone in any way.

A person can still use the cell phone with a hands free device.

The Senate Transportation Committee approved the bill and it now moves onto the full Senate.

It has already been approved by the House.
