Walmart campaign raises funds for food banks, hunger awareness

TEXARKANA – (KTAL/KMSS) Harvest Regional Food Bank hopes the campaign to ‘Fight Hunger. Spark Change’ will raise awareness about food insecurity in the Ark-La-Tex.

Shoppers can donate at Walmart cash registers or by purchasing items marked with the ‘Fight Hunger’ sticker. Organizers said a portion of the proceeds of those purchases will benefit local food banks.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, one in eight Americans struggle with hunger. “Our partnership with Wal-Mart has made a big impact on what we’re able to do. Basically, we wouldn’t be able to do the work that we do if we didn’t have their support financially and through food,” said Camille Wrinkle, Executive Director of Harvest Regional Food Bank.

Harvest Regional Food Bank serves 10 counties in Southwest Arkansas and Northeast Texas. Wrinkle said Walmart donates several hundred thousand pounds of food annually.
