WEBSTER PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Cheryl Toney, 37, of Homer, is in custody charged with vehicular homicide following a head-on collision that took the life of one man and seriously injured two women late Thursday afternoon in Webster Parish. Impairment is suspected to be a factor.

Toney was at the wheel of a 2013 Ford Explorer that veered into the opposite lane, crashing into an on-coming car and taking the life of 77-year-old John Hylan of Denton, Nebraska, and seriously injuring 80-year-old Janet Moss of Shreveport and 70-year-old Shirley Prince of Homer.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, troopers from Troop G began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on U.S. 79 in Webster Parish, just south of the Claiborne Parish line.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as a 2013 Ford Explorer, driven by Toney of Homer, was traveling north on U.S. 79, when, for reasons still under investigation, Toney’s vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane and collided with the 2009 Toyota Sienna driven by Moss.

Moss was properly restrained, as was Hylan, her passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Webster Parish Coroner’s Office. Moss was airlifted to Ochsner LSU Hospital in serious condition.

Prince, a passenger in Toney’s vehicle, also sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Ochsner LSU Hospital. Toney, who also was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries during the crash. She was transported to Claiborne Memorial Medical Center in Homer.

Toney was placed under arrest at the hospital and in addition to vehicular homicide, is charged with negligent injuring (2 counts), and driving left of center. Voluntary toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and submitted for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.
