SUDBURY, Mass. (WPRI) — Would drinking beer and wine while shopping make going to the grocery store less of a chore?
The Whole Foods Market in Sudbury wants its customers to be able to drink alcoholic beverages while they shop for groceries.
The company brought their idea to the town’s board of selectmen with the hopes of securing a liquor license.
They were told the town doesn’t have any more liquor licenses to hand out.
“We are at our liquor license quota for the town, so we couldn’t entertain it anyway,” said Bob Haarde, Board of Selectmen chairman. “So the question would be if they wanted to do a petition to the state legislator,” said Haarde.
Our Boston affiliate reports that process would take more than a year, and the company would still have to get approval from Sudbury town officials.
There was mixed-reaction from shoppers about the plan.
“I am pretty pumped about it,” said Jeff Winn. “Imagine shopping while you’re having an adult beverage. That’s fantastic!”
Others were worried about safety and the fact that children would be inside the stores.
