Shreveport Little Theatre opens “The Foreigner” and marks a milestone

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Shreveport Little Theatre’s new season will kick off Friday with a presentation of “The Foreigner,” a delightful romp that takes place in a fishing lodge in a rural Georgia county where two Englishmen arrive as guests.

The comedy is about Charlie, an Englishman, who arrives as a guest at a fishing lodge. He is terribly shy and pretends to be a foreigner who is unable to understand English. He overhears more than he should in this comedy.

This year’s season marks the Shreveport Little Theatre’s 100th anniversary and in addition to the season’s plays, a number of things are planned to celebrate the theatre’s anniversary that will include a picture book, a grand gala, as well as a documentary telling the theatre’s story throughout the past century.

Founded in 1922, the theatre group has produced plays without interruption through the Great Depression, World War II, and even two fires, one in 1986 and another 2008.

In the beginning, the theatre group used several venues around Shreveport to stage plays until 1927 when its permanent theatre at 812 Margaret Place was completed. The theatre has 170 seats and is completely handicapped-accessible.

“The Foreigner” opens Thursday and will run at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, as well as on Oct. 22 and 23, and will have matinee performances at 2 p.m. Sunday and Oct. 24. Tickets are now available here.

On a more serious and poignant note, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30, and 2 p.m. Oct. 31, “The Meeting,” an American play by Jeff Stetson about an imaginary meeting between Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X in 1965 in a hotel in Harlem during the height of the Civil Rights Movement,  presented with the Mahogany Ensemble Theater.

And then, just in time for the holidays, a musical that makes young and old smile – Irving Berlin’s wonderful musical, “White Christmas,” which will be presented over the second and third weekend of December.
