HEMPSTEAD COUNTY, Ark. (KTAL/KMSS) – Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton has confirmed that human remains were found Sunday in a wooded area just outside Hope.
Singleton said some men who were checking on their deer feeder around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday located the remains several miles south of Hope off Highway 174.
Singleton said it’s an area where a man, Joseph Cowart, 59, went missing in May, 2012. Singleton added that the remains were found on property once owned by Cowart, who was a Navy Veteran. However, Singleton said the remains will have to be positively identified, as they appeared to have been in the woods for several years.
The remains have been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for identification and cause of death. Singleton said a rifle was also found near the remains.
Arkansas State Police are assisting in the investigation.
