ABILENE, Texas | Michael Sookdeo drove in two runs, but the Grambling State University baseball team fell behind early and could not rally in a 7-4 loss to Abilene Christian on Friday night at Crutcher Scott Field.
Grambling State (11-14) surrendered six runs off five hits in the first inning and held Abilene Christian (11-13) to just one run over the next seven innings as the Tigers nearly clawed their way back from the early deficit.
How It Happened
Abilene Christian (11-13) struck for six runs on five hits off Grambling State starter Grant Landry in the first inning to grab a quick 6-0 lead.
Grambling State cut the margin to 6-1 with one run on four hits in the second.
With two out in the frame, Nick Wheeler singled to left and advanced to second on a Rafael Ramirez III base hit to center. Michael Sookdeo followed with a single to right to plate Wheeler as Ramirez stopped at second. Kevin Whitaker, Jr. singled to right to load the bases. However, Ian Bailey struck out to end the inning.
The Wildcats added to the lead with one run in the fourth to extend the advantage to 7-1.
The Tigers picked up a pair of runs in the sixth as Drexler Macaay scored on a Ramirez double to left and Sookdeo drove in Ramirez with a double to right as Grambling State closed the gap to 7-3.
Grambling State continued to claw its way back as Ian Bailey, who reached on a leadoff walk, came in to score when Macaay reached on an error to cut the deficit to 7-4 in the seventh.

> Abilene Christian finished with seven runs on 13 hits, committed a pair of errors and stranded five on base
> Derek Scott led the way for the Wildcats by going 3-for-3, with one RBI and one run scored
> Luis Trevino, Koby Claborn and Seth Watts each recorded two hits
> Spencer Chirpich (4-2) earned the victory in 5.2 innings pitched. He gave up three runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked two
> Cole McKay, Bryant Jordan and Brennan Lewis (seventh save) worked in relief
Grambling State continues its three-game non-conference series against Abilene Christian on Saturday. First pitch against the Wildcats is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Crutcher Field.
