Hughes Springs looks to depend on talented running game early in the season

Sports

The Hughes Springs Mustangs are coming off a 9-3 season, where they lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

The Mustangs return 10 starters from last years team including quarterback Andrew Gaul but they have to replace five starters on the offensive line.

Head Coach Chris Edwards is hoping he can rely on a couple of strong running backs while the line gets seasoned.

Edwards said, “We feel like we have a god one two punch. We’re a big back featured offense. We have another big back, he’s a sophomore, he was a freshman last year, played defense for us, he’s a big kind Travon Kennedy. He’s 6’3 210 lbs and runs like a Mack Truck. The other guys is one of those guys, he’s a senior Bryce Johnston. He’s kind of a thick legged guy. He’s shorter 5’9, 5’10 but he always finds a way to make the first guy miss. He’s just one of those kids that have that little knack for having good vision and seeing the hole and making yards.”

The Mustangs open the season against Hamshire-Fannett at Center High School on Friday August 31st.
