Johnson Uses Daughter as Motivation at Grambling

From walk-on to defensive standout De’Aumante Johnson has seen it all at Grambling. The Plain Dealing native grew up with strong ties to the program, and always knew he wanted to be a Tiger.

De’Aumante Johnson said, “What most people don’t know is I am a Grambling baby. I grew up in a Grambling family. My aunts, my uncles, my uncle played for Coach Eddie Rob. So, I was a Grambling man since I was a little baby. So, I always knew about Grambling.”

But his journey to Grambling didn’t exactly go as planned. A low ACT cost Johnson a scholarship, leaving only a walk-on option with the Tigers.

Johnson said, “That made me settle down a lot. It humbled me a lot. Now I’m an honor roll student, graduating in December. It made me realize this life is not just about football. You have to get you education to be successful in life”

When Johnson made it onto the field he became a star for the Tigers. A part of the family, something that means a lot to the senior.

Johnson said, “Family is extremely big to me. This football team is my family. They’ve been my family since I’ve been here. Coach Fobbs knows my family. So, family is probably the most important piece of life if you ask me.”

But all of the on field stuff pails in comparison to his true motivation, his five year old daughter Shyla.

Johnson said, “I honor my daughter every time I play the game of football, every day as a matter of fact. I call her every morning and tell her thank you. Most people are like ‘Why do you tell your daughter thank you?’ My daughter changed my life completely. She’s my everything. I carry the necklace on my neck that I got. My daughter is everything to me. Every morning I wake up and thank God for her, and I make sure I tell myself whatever you’re doing today in today’s world, make sure you’re doing it to be a progress to her life to make her life better.”

Tomorrow, Johnson will play in his final Bayou Classic, a culmination of four years of blood, sweat, and tears with the Tigers. If he has it his way the journey won’t end at the Superdome, it will just be one step closer to another national championship.
