SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) –  The YMCA of Northwest Louisiana is doing away with tackle football and will play flag football only.

The change will take effect in 2019.

“We have been carefully following this issue for a number of years educating ourselves as much as possible,” says Gary Lash, CEO of YMCA of Northwest Louisiana. “We know how important this topic has become and the evidence is simply too strong now to ignore. This is the right thing to do to protect our kids and our community.”

The change is made to help prevent football-related brain injuries in children.

“It is a priority for us at the Y to focus on the overall wellness of the individuals we serve, and we have a great responsibility toward the young athletes who enjoy our sports programs”, says Jonathan Ford,
Sports Director.

Signup for flag football is now underway and will continue through August.
