TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – Police are warning drivers of a sinkhole under a busy Texarkana street.
According to Texarkana police, traffic has been down to one lane at West 7th and Pine Street since Saturday.
Police initially said the sinkhole covered two lanes of traffic and can swallow a car, but TXDOT says it’s not quite that large, although it is still a few feet wide.
“The cracked pipe compromised the integrity of the infrastructure underneath the road and the actual sinkhole is really only about 3 to 4 feet wide by 3 to 4 feet deep but the area that they’re working in right now is bigger because they have to have room to work around that area,” said TxDOT spokesperson Heather Deaton.
A cracked pipe that is no longer in use was determined the cause of the sinkhole. TXDOT says Texarkana Water Utilities has agreed to repair and reinforce the pipe.
Crews began working on repairs Tuesday. The project should take about a week with weather permitting.
