SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Power has been restored to 47,100 of the more than 70,000 customers affected by severe storms that swept through the ArkLaTex Wednesday afternoon.
AEP SWEPCO says more than 500 line and service personnel including crews from throughout SWEPCO and outside contractors are working in the field to restore power to the remaining 22,900 customers as safely and quickly as possible.
SWEPCO says the storms caused extensive damage to the electric system, including hundreds of broken utility poles and downed wires.
As of early Friday afternoon, remaining outages included 18,200 customers in Texas and 4,700 in Louisiana.
The utility says much of the remaining work involves areas with difficult access or extensive work at a single location to restore service to smaller numbers of customers. For example, a single pole replacement can take several hours to complete in order to restore power to five customers.
However, SWEPCO warns that with the potential for more storms coming, additional outages may occur.
